Volvo S90: ‘Radical elegance’

The S90 sedan should’ve been the first new Volvo launched under Chinese owner Geely’s watch. That was the original plan. But late in the day, the S90 and XC90 release dates were swapped, fast-tracking the SUV to market for 2014.

Like the XC90, the S90 is built on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), a modular components set that’s adjustable for length, width and height. And just like the XC90, only four-cylinder engines will be offered, all gasoline for the U.S. market.

The S90’s door handles are noticeably damped as you pull on them, the door closes with an authoritatively tight thunk, and you settle into sumptuously padded, double-stitched leather seats that feel fit for a sea-to-shining-sea mission.
